The basics of defamation
Defamation of character, simply put, is when one person lowers the reputation of another often by publishing something.
When something defamatory is communicated it is called a "defamatory matter". A defamatory matter usually contains a "sting" (imputation) that can arise in various ways perhaps directly (or through innuendo).
Once something defamatory is published there is a cause of action even if there is no monetary loss.
Defamation has a number of aims that inlude the goal of consoling feelings, and to vindicate the person's reputation.
